Tips on Eyewear Care and Cleaning

There’s nothing more annoying than trying to watch a movie or chat with a friend only to be distracted by the spots and smudges on your glasses. You may be tempted to grab the corner of your T-shirt and quickly rub the grime away, but improper cleaning could scratch or damage your glasses. So you’re left staring at the spots on your glasses, wishing you had a chance to properly clean them.

Following the right steps to cleaning your glasses will ensure they stand the test of time and stay scratch-free for as long as possible. But if you’re not sure how to clean and disinfect glasses, Visionworks can help. Check out our guide to learn how to clean your glasses and how to disinfect glasses like a professional.

1.Gather Supplies

Before getting started, you’ll need to round up the right supplies. A basic cleaning requires just a microfiber cloth and a cleaning solution made for eyeglasses. Choose a spray that is designed for polycarbonate lenses and lens coatings to keep your glasses in the best condition. If you’re in a pinch, you can try dish soap. (Make sure it doesn’t contain lotion.)

2.Wash Your Hands

With your supplies ready, it’s time to wash your hands before you touch your glasses again. In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, you’re probably used to this routine. So lather up well and then dry your hands—you want to make sure you don’t transfer any bacteria to your glasses.

3.Rinse Glasses with Water

The next step is to rinse your glasses in tap water. This will remove dust particles and other debris that may have built up on your glasses. If you don’t rinse them before cleaning, the tiny particles might scratch your glasses as you clean—so be sure not to skip this step!

4.Wipe Glasses with a Microfiber Cloth

Once you’ve given your glasses a good run through the water, you can dry them gently with the microfiber cloth. Avoid other types of towels when drying, since they could smudge or scratch the lenses. And if you notice any smudges when you’re finished drying them, don’t worry. You’re not done cleaning them yet.

5.Spray Glasses with Cleaner

Now you can get your glasses sparkling clean using a cleaning solution or dish soap. Spray the cleaner directly onto the lenses, or pour a small drop of dish soap on each side of the lens. Rub in circles with your fingertips or with the microfiber cloth. After a few seconds of rubbing, rinse the glasses under water one more time until all of the cleaning solution is off of the lens.

6.Dry Glasses

Here’s the key to how to clean your glasses without leaving streaks: the final drying process needs to be done without using the microfiber towel. At this point, you have two options. You can either dry them by gently shaking off the water and letting them air-dry, or by using canned air to blast away the water.
